Matrace představuje v tvorbě Maria Kotrby jeden z emancipačních kroků, kdy se definitivně rozhodl věnovat sochařství. Po absolutoriu AVU neměl jistotu, zda je pro něj sochařství správná volba, teprve během pobytu na Akademii Minerva v Groningenu, kde působil jako pedagog, a pod vlivem díla sochařky Hany Wichterlové našel v sochařství opět smysl svého snažení. Matrace navazuje na první soustavnější hledání sochařského výrazu. Téma člověka potýkajícího se s břemenem postupně transformoval od tekutých tělesných tvarů ke stále pevnějším a původní fatalistické nálady se proměňují ve stále výraznější aktivitu, se kterou jeho figury krychli či jiné břemeno zvládají s jistotou a svrchovanou dynamikou.

Mattress represents one of the defining moments in Marián Kotrba’s career, marking the point when he definitively decided to devote himself to sculpture. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts, he was unsure whether sculpture was the right choice for him; it was only during his stay at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, where he worked as a teacher and under the influence of the work of sculptor Hana Wichterlová, that he rediscovered the meaning of his efforts in sculpture. Mattress builds on his first systematic search for a sculptural expression. The theme of a person grappling with a burden gradually transformed from fluid bodily forms to increasingly solid ones and the original fatalistic moods give way to ever more pronounced activity, with which his figures handle a cube or another burden with confidence and supreme dynamism.
