Tvorba Petra Nikla se pohybuje mezi malbou, kresbou, instalací, performancí, hudbou i literaturou. Jako zakládající člen skupiny Tvrdohlaví se podílel na formování české výtvarné scény konce osmdesátých let. Pro jeho práci je charakteristická imaginativnost, hravost a důraz na proces proměny, často s využitím intuitivní kresby a vrstvení barevných struktur. V obraze Čtenářka se Petr Nikl vrací k intimnímu žánru figury soustředěné do sebe, okamžiku ponoření do „četby“ (možná spíše sledování?) – tedy k situaci, v níž se akt dívání se na list/display stává metaforou introspekce, imaginace i ztráty sebe sama ve světě textu či obrazu. Kompozice i světelnost obrazu zřetelně odkazují k ikonické Dívce čtoucí dopis (1657–1659) Johannese Vermeera. Stejně jako u Vermeera, i u Nikla je figura konstruována nikoli jako portrét konkrétní osoby, ale jako model koncentrace. Vermeerovský motiv je u Nikla interpretován – i zde světlo přichází z vnějšího okna, ale zároveň z obou displejů, telefonu a notebooku.

His work spans painting, drawing, installation, performance, music and literature. As a founding member of the Tvrdohlaví group, he helped shape the Czech art scene of the late 1980s. His work is marked by imagination, playfulness and an emphasis on transformation, often through intuitive drawing and layered colour structures. In The Reader, Petr Nikl returns to the intimate motif of a self-absorbed figure immersed in “reading” (or perhaps watching?)—a situation in which looking at a page or screen becomes a metaphor for introspection, imagination and the loss of self in the world of text or image. The composition and lighting clearly refer to Johannes Vermeer’s Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window (1657–1659). As in Vermeer, the figure is not a portrait but a model of concentration; here, light comes not only from the window, but also from the phone and laptop screens.
