Orangery Eco-studio

At GHMP’s eco-studio in Troja Château’s orangery, visitors can explore their creativity and make art while escaping from the crowds of tourists in downtown Prague. The studio is designed for children, all types of schools (preschool, primary, secondary, and tertiary schools, after-school art courses), families, adults, senior citizens, visitors with special needs, and other groups or individuals. This seasonal creative space is used for educational programs related to the gallery’s exhibitions and collections as well as (with a view to the château’s history) the art of the Baroque. Our programs take an interdisciplinary approach, and we also focus on ecological or environmental questions related to art. Within this context, we apply a wide range of techniques that introduce participants to the concepts of recycling and the use of natural materials (most of them directly from the château gardens). Visitors can explore making hand-made paper, working with potters’ clay, textile production, wax batik dyeing, creating objects out of natural materials, land-art projects, or tactile and acoustic activities.

During the school year, the studio is most frequently used by school groups participating in GHMP’s educational program as part of their regular art classes, project days, or field trips. Families, adults, senior citizens, and other members of the public may also attend art workshops and special programs organized as part of the Open Gardens Weekend and the Troja Wine Festival.

During summer vacation, Troja Château hosts all-day Summer Art Workshops where participants can spend their free time in a meaningful way by making art. The events are led by qualified internal and external instructors with a wide variety of specializations. We also occasionally work on the basis of specific works by artists from our exhibitions or collections. The workshops are also where students from secondary schools and universities (faculties of education, Academy of Fine Arts, and Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design) can do their professional training and participate in classroom observation.

The eco-studio is ca. 200 m² in size and has room for 40–60 participants. It consists of a main studio with separate work stations, a space for tactile educational activities, a space for working with clay (kiln, potter’s wheel), and a storage area for strollers and baby carriages. The venue is barrier-free.
