The exhibition and the accompanying publication explore the development of engaged and protest art in the Czech Lands, with an emphasis on the period since the 2008 global financial crisis. Domestic developments are placed in the broader context of international movements such as Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter, Me Too, Fridays for Future, Extinction Rebellion and others. In addition to Czech collective initiatives, the project also focuses on international art groups whose activities have influenced political events and inspired domestic artists. Attention is also paid to art in public spaces, social interventions and participatory strategies that support civic initiatives and strengthen social resilience. The project explores the relationships between individuals and both global and local communities, analysing solidarity, responsibility and artistic means as forms of active engagement. The group reflects on the interconnectedness of art, social justice, human rights and environmental issues, highlighting the inseparable nature of these topics in the Anthropocene era. The publication utilises documentary and artistic forms and explores the concept of “performative democracy,” as described by theorist Peter Weibel. At the same time, the entire project raises questions about the role of protest art in the political sphere: what are the boundaries of its social acceptability, rejection and possible punishment?
