Dům U Zlatého prstenu /The Golden Ring/
long-term exhibition
Tue – Sun 10.00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m.
The renovated space of the Golden Ring House will once again come to life with a new exhibition, After Velvet,
which will open on November 17th, 2009, exactly 20 years after the Velvet Revolution. The exhibit was conceived by
curators of City Gallery Prague Sandra Baborovská and Karel Srp.
>>> The post-November retrospective features the work of several generations of Czech artists from 1989 to the present.
These will not be presented chronologically, but rather in thematic groups comprised of the works of different
generations of living artists. Visitors will encounter recent creations by younger contemporary Czech artists who
were only partially affected by the communist regime, alongside the work of an older generation which was primarily
trained at the Academy of Fine Arts or the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, and which laid the
groundwork for the diverse post-revolution art scene. After Velvet aims to address the viewer with its multiple layers of meaning and striking visual allure.
Admission: CZK 120 / 60
Exhibition autors: Sandra Baborovská and Karel Srp
An extensive catalog and guide will be published for the "After Velvet" exhibition. The catalog will be
published by Arbor Vitae societas. Principal media partner: Týden, Týden.cz, MF Dnes and ČT
The current complicated layout of the Golden Ring House arose from the constructional unification of two separate
medieval houses. The cellars and the corridor on the first floor with the original barrel vault are preserved from
the early Gothic period of building development. In this corridor there are also fragments of wall paintings from
the end of the 15th century.
>>> The wooden painted decking ceilings with Renaissance themes date from the 16th century.
The newel staircase, small oval skylight and Renaissance barrel vault come from the period of rebuilding in about
1609. The entry portal with the house sign was adapted changed in the 19th century.
The Gallery acquired use of the building in 1990. The reading room is open
to the public on the 2nd floor. The Reading room is for on-site reading only. It offers interested persons the
possibility studying professional literature, an extensive range of exhibition catalogues and professionals
magazines on the subject of fine art. It is available either as part of viewing the exposition or independently
- entrance is free. The foundation of its collection comprises of catalogues and publications referring to works
of artists, whose works are included in Gallery collections, or artists that the Gallery had exhibited and had
published a catalogue for.
