28/5 – 19/9, 2010
Tue – Sun 10.00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m.
An intergenerational confrontation in thirteen chapters reflecting artistic
phenomena, thematic and theoretical contexts, personalities and
developments, spotlighting progressive creative acts thanks to which, in
the period after the second world war and during the subsequent reign
supreme of ideological demagoguery, Czech art managed to preserve the
continuity of its cultural relevance and value.

The exhibition´s concept aims at a revision of schematic assessment of individual artists, creating
an open ground for a context-bound approach to their production. The
show´s concluding section briefly outlines the juncture at which, in the
aftermath of the first revision of the Stalinist regime, Czech art embarked
in 1957 on its drawn-out return journey to the family of European culture.

Municipal Library
The Municipal Library on the square Mariánské was built in 1925-1928 according to the plans of architect František
Roith, a student of professor Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy. The building was conceived as a cultural
institution with extensive possibilities of use including exhibition, lecture and concert halls.
>>>
In the building's eastern wing there is the official flat of the Prague Mayor, furnished in Art Deco style.
The building architecture works from a rationalistically contained layout plan and from simple volume planning.
Above the main entrance and balcony balustrade there are allegorical statues from Ladislav Kofránek.
The building facade is covered with travertine, which is used along with brass and artificial stone in interior
decoration as well. The author of the ornamental geometric decoration in the central hall ceiling is František
Kysela.
The Gallery acquired the extensive exhibition space on the 2nd floor in 1992. After their restoration, the GHMP has
been organizing representative exhibitions here. As a part of the adaptation there was also implementation of
new artistic entrance into the Gallery from the street Valentinská. Architect Vlado Milunič designed the entrance
in 1996.
